benefits of
martial arts

At Summit Martial Arts we believe that martial arts is not simply a physical activity, a style name, or a fad.

Our belief is that if you are going to practice real martial arts - not martial fighting, not martial sport, not martial fitness, not buy a belt - then you must also be learning to discipline your mind. The martial arts at their core were conceived as a way of helping the student achieve higher levels of discipline of their spirit, soul and mind. The intent was to use the art to create a person that derived benefit in all areas of life; not just the one in a thousand chance of physical conflict! These benefits include better concentration, better discipline, better balance, and a more peaceful attitude toward others.

In short, martial arts should help you become a happier, calmer, more effective human being, not just teach you how to fight.
Mental Strength
Developing mental fortitude is an important practice within martial arts. Traditional principles – such as indomitable spirit and perseverance – stress the importance of fighting through preconceived limits. Discipline is one of the biggest traits that leads to success in life. Authentic martial arts develops that - facing challenges in front of you and discovering within yourself the strength and confidence to overcome them is an important life skill that will translate to all other areas of your life.

Another important aspect of martial arts is learning to feel, accept and control your emotions. By practicing martial arts you will at some point feel anger, fear, frustration and anxiety, but in small doses. Our instructors understand this process, having all experienced the same feelings at some point. They are here to help you through this learning curve. Discovering how to deal with these emotions will help you grow mentally. This, in turn, will help you in everyday life as you discover healthier and more productive ways of processing your own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.

Social Life
In adulthood, it can be very tough for some to find peers with mutual interests and outlooks. Martial arts is a great place to meet new people from all walks of life. As confidence grows you naturally start to develop more interests and meet more people outside the dojo. As well, many people develop lifelong friendships within the dojo. Going through difficult training – such as belt testing – can really help create social bonds between friends. Partners develop real respect for each other, and become part of the same team.

Break bad habits and develop good habits
Self-discipline and self-control are lauded as great reasons for children to participate in martial arts, but adults often experience even greater benefits.  It’s not unusual for a martial artist to credit his or her training with being able to finally quit smoking, recover from substance abuse, stand up to their boss or eat healthier. Sometimes the added confidence, self-discipline, stress relief, and increased energy can add up to huge benefits at home or in the workplace.  Professional careers often have a similar trajectory as your martial arts development.  The two disciplines may not seem connected, but that sense of focus and purpose while training has helped many students progress in the workplace.

Practical self-defense skills
Summit Martial Arts prepares students with real world self-defense skills and teaches how to avoid dangerous situations. We teach the world’s best martial arts self-defense, personal protection, and military combat systems.
Our Karate classes are a blend of striking, blocking, trapping, kicking, footwork, stances, grappling, throwing, takedowns, retaining balance. Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes cover all ground positions, surviving, controlling, sweeps, joint locks and chokes, falls, getting back to your feet. These skills are potentially life-saving in the case you found yourself in a position where you need to defend yourself.

Physical Fitness
Every class has a fitness phase to improve overall fitness, and also have the ability to perform in a dynamic and stressful environment no matter what the conditions. Physical activity has far-reaching benefits – it can help control your weight, reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, prevent certain cancers and more. The physical activity alone can help improve your mental health and mood, strengthen your bones and muscles, and improve your chances of living a longer, healthier life. Summit Martial Arts classes offer rigorous physical activity in a safe, self paced way, to improve conditioning and fitness.

Balance
Balance is usually associated with softer arts like tai chi, but training in any qualty martial art can help.  Arts that train sweeps and throws tend to be especially effective for improving balance, as are styles with a heavy focus on kicking.

Improved reflexes and coordination
Most beginning martial artists expect to drop some weight, improve cardiovascular health, and build strength, but many are surprised the first time they catch the soap they dropped in the shower.  While that’s a somewhat silly example, having improved coordination and faster reflexes can help in many areas of life, from playing sports to driving more safely.
