Summit Martial Arts is the only International Karate Kobudo Federation Dojo in Ohio. What that means for you is that you get the highest Karate education possible. We are certified to teach curriculm which is standardized accross the globe. As part of the International Shorin Ryu Karate Kobudo Federation, you also get access to the online video library of detailed instruction so you can practice and study at home or brush up on your skills.
As a Certified dojo, we are committed to preserving Matsumura Shorin Ryu Karate & Kobudo, the vision and teaching methods. To that end, we teach Karate as a realistic method of self-defense and not as a tournament sport.
Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate (空手) is a martial art developed in Okinawan, and influenced by Kung Fu, particularly Fujian White Crane and Tiger systems. Karate is now predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands and palm-heel strikes. Students learn individual techniques correctly Kihon, Kata & Waza combinations of skills put together, and kickboxing, sparring or kumite. Kobudō refers to the weapon systems of Okinawan martial arts. These systems can have from one to as many as a dozen weapons in their curriculum, among the bō or staff, sai (three-pronged truncheon), tonfa (handled club), kama (sickle), and nunchaku (two rope- or chain-connected sticks), tambo (short stick), the Jo (middle length staff) and the eku (boat oar of traditional Okinawan design). Many don't know much about real Karate because they trained in sport or McDojo since they're kids. The essence of Okinawan Karate has always been real-life effectiveness, and it is very similar to modern military close combat systems: simple, lethal and practical.
