How do I decide between doing karate or jiu jitsu? Can I do both?
Yes you can do both! Many of our students do. However, if you want to choose between them - there are differing benefits to each. Karate feels more familiar because you're standing and the actions are comprised of natural human movements. It teaches footwork, balance, flexibility, precision, speed and power. Jiu Jitsu is ground fighting and since 90% of real-life fights end up on the ground, the self-defense practicality is obvious. It is designed to enable smaller people to defend themselves and reverse the situation. However, it is very close contact so if you struggle with personal space or claustrophobia, jiu jitsu may not be the best choice for you.
What if I'm not very physically fit or don't have super fast reflexes - can I still learn martial arts?
Absolutely. We develop all of those things through training. Athleticisim, flexibility and reflexes all come with time and practice. With a postiive attitude, the human body is amazingly adaptive and can learn anything. No one is perfect, and no one gets their black belt on their first day. Our specialty is working with students to find their strengths and weaknesses; everyone has something that could be improved. We take great joy in helping students who might struggle with other forms of fitness to succeed in our classes.
Will I get hurt?
Safety is a top priority at our school. We are a highly technical, non-competitive school with the mindset that we train with partners, not opponents. The goal is not to beat each other up; the goal is to assist each other in developing high quality martial arts skills. The best martial artists in the world train with repitition and precision, developing their mechanics, accuracy and timing first and discovering their power and speed secondarily. As the old saying goes, "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." That said, martial arts is a combat art and shouldn't be undertaken lightly.
Will I feel comfortable?
We understand that visiting a martical arts school for the first time takes a lot of courage and can feel intimidating. At Summit Martial Arts, making our guests feel at home is our priority! You will find our dojo to be one of the most welcoming and approachable places in town. Everyone is always treated with respect whether they are a guest or a member.
Are there women that train at Summit Martial Arts?
Yes! We have a number of women in all our programs (karate, brazilian jiu jitsu, japanese ju jitsu), and lots of girls in our kids programs. While many martial arts schools are male-dominant we pride ourselves in having a culture that welcomes everyone. In addition, we are a highly technical school and women generally excel in this environment. Here at Summit, we love the energy that female warriors bring! Read our testimonials to see for yourself how the women in our programs feel about Summit Martial Arts.

My son has been attending Summit Martial Arts for about 3 years now. Absolutely fantastic atmosphere, great instructors, and no hidden fees. Much better experience than some others in the Delaware area
